Leafcutter John

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaCOvylhxks

John’s first recordings reached the offices of Planet Mu Records in 1999 where its founder and Aphex Twin collaborator Mike Paradinas encouraged John’s more experimental efforts. During this time, he acquired the name Leafcutter John, suggested by a friend who compared his creativity and industriousness to that of a
leafcutter ant. Working with Planet Mu, John released three critically-acclaimed albums which culminated in the release of The Housebound Spirit, an album which combined elements of music-concrete and electro-acoustic music with voice and guitar work more commonly found in folk music. It won an Honorary
Mention at the 2004 Ars Electronica Awards, and was featured in The Wire’s top 50 records of 2003.

His fourth album The Forest and the Sea was nominated for Best Album (Qwartz Electronic Music Awards 2007) and was toured extensively throughout Europe and Australia. Resurrection, released in 2015, marked another shift for John, building on his formidable reputation as an inventor of unusual handmade electronic instruments and extraordinary music software. For the track Gulps, John used a recursive software system to layer a recording of the North Sea 7.1 billion times, once for each human alive on the planet.

For his latest (seventh) album, John is thrilled to team up with fellow stalwarts of idiosyncratic electronica Border Community on the joyously upbeat Yes! Come Parade With Us. Weaving field recordings from the Norfolk coastline together with layers of lyrical modular synth, it comprises seven bright-eyed anthems that beam with positivity and a sense of place. An intensely personal project, John has also hand-drawn the labyrinthine album art and animated his own suitably exuberant rainbow-hued video to accompany the boundless enthusiasm of the restorative title track Yes! Come Parade With Us.

As part of his ongoing quest to create more expressive instruments with which to write and produce music John has designed, built and developed a unique light controlled musical interface which is the heart of his live show.

Katie Gately

Finding that perfect balance between experimental, avant-garde and accessible pop tendencies equals finding alchemical gold” – The Quietus

American experimental electronic musician Katie Gately utilizes a plethora of computer programs to shape her voice into dense, unsettling sound constructions. Her unpredictable compositions waver between industrial collages and playful, abstract pop tunes, exhibiting an absurdist sense of humor and an ear for rhythm and melody.

Raised in Brooklyn, Gately earned a degree in film production and sound design from the University of Southern California but never formally trained as a musician. In 2012, the Los Angeles-based artist began uploading her compositions to Soundcloud and by late 2013 she had released a self-titled 12" EP on Public Information and an EP cassette on Blue Tapes, both to critical acclaim. Following a limited lathe cut 7” single with Prayer on FET Press, Gately was invited to contribute to FatCat Records' split series, sharing an EP with Tlaotlon. In 2015, Gately appeared on Nosaj Thing's Fated LP and remixed Björk's song "Family”.

Her debut album Color, released on TriAngle Records in October 2016, was well-received. Production work in 2017 included a remix for Zola Jesus and most notably, production on 6 of the 11 songs on serpentwithfeet's debut LP soil.

Gately spent most of 2018 hanging out with her mother who was a monumental badass of a human being. She is very slowly working on her second LP.

Sunken Foal

Dunk Murphy (Sunken Foal) has been writing, performing and producing all manner of electronic and acoustic music for 20 years. Under monikers Sunken Foal and Press Charges, Minced Oath and as a member of Ambulance and The Natural History Museum he has had releases on Planet-Mu, D1, Black Acre, Acroplane, The Fear, Front End Synthetics, U:Mack, Heresy and Countersunk. Championed by BBC6 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs, Donal Dineen and the late John Peel, Dunk's music covers a large area showcasing his deep knowledge of synthesizers, mechanical rhythms and plucked instruments as well as a keen ear for sound design and emotive melody.

In February 2019 Dunk began releasing his 'Ribbon Works' E.P. series through his Countersunk label (countersunk.org). Written and recorded between 2012 and 2019 'Ribbon Works' is a series of pieces accompanied by multi-tracked ribbon synthesizer arrangements. Celebrated Dublin singer/songwriters Katie Kim and Si Schroeder's vocal tracks have been set to new arrangements of sweeping, thick, harmonic glissandi with scratching electronic percussion.

Dunk also curates the '101 Beats Per Minute' project. 101 Beats Per Minute is a collective of over 40 electronic music producers based in Ireland releasing new tracks on countersunk.org each week. Contributors include: Sunken Foal, Ellll, Eomac, Joni, Kobina, Alan O'Boyle, David Donohoe, Linda Buckley and Seán Mac Erlaine.

Kate Butler

Music of high romance and low frequency is the main source of inspiration for Kate Butler's DJ sets. In the late 1990s and early noughties in Dublin, she was playing records, broadcasting on Power FM and writing about the local electronic music scene for national newspapers. In 2017, she started a monthly show on Dublin Digital Radio (ddr.) and also produces Atomic, where young people get an opportunity to present their own radio show on ddr. She DJs on the community clubbing scene, playing jungle, hardcore and footwork (Rabble, Open Ear, Back Story). A recent collaboration with author/architect Owen O'Doherty and the Irish Architecture Foundation, to highlight the historic pioneering work of womxn in inventing and electronic music, will be at the Body & Soul Festival. For this event, she'll be going deep into spaced out grooves, trippy dirges, bountiful bass and disorientating futurism
