This year Bottlenote celebrate the 10th edition of their annual festival of improvised music in Dublin. Bottlenote once again proudly present a selection of improvising musicians from Ireland alongside their international counterparts for three days and nights of bold, challenging and innovative music. Each concert will feature two performances by both well established and new projects along with a smattering of ad-hoc ensembles made up of the festival participants devised over the course of the weekend.

Bottlenote is a group of Dublin based musicians working in the field of improvised music. Over the past decade we have hosted events in alternative arts spaces and buildings of architectural, cultural and historical significance. This year Bottlenote will set up camp in Studio 10 on Wicklow St. in the heart of Dublin's city centre. Lighting designer John Crudden will again join our production team to animate this space.

Bottlenote offers a unique musical experience for audiences in Ireland and functions as a developmental hothouse for Irish improvising musicians. Over the past decade our shows have received acclaim for framing music improvisation in a manner that captures the public imagination.

The Bottlenote festival is curated by Shane Latimer and Justin Carroll and is supported by the Arts Council.

"A no-holds-barred celebration of beautiful noise. It’s a defiant stand against the “safeness” of mainstream commercial music, providing musicians and audiences with the space (literally and figuratively) to get past their preconceptions in an environment that buzzes with creative energy. [...] In fact, no-one knows what to expect – that’s the idea."- The Irish Times

Festival Participants

Lina Andonovska, Matthew Bourne, Justin Carroll, Fionnuala Conway, Stephen Davis, Tobias Delius, Lenka Dobai, Matthew Jacobson, Shane Latimer, Cora Venus Lunny, Aonghus McEvoy, Judith Ring

Festival Program
Friday 22nd February

8pm - Cora Venus Lunny

Cora Venus Lunny is an improvising violinist, violist, vocalist and composer with a strong classical background and extensive experience in many genres especially contemporary classical, improvised and folk musics. A fascination with consciousness and groove drives her passion for music and performance. Cora has a special fondness for bringing new music to diverse audiences, and she has premiered many contemporary works as a soloist, with her string quartet, with the Crash Ensemble, and as a collaborator.

10pm - Orgone Accumulator

Tobias Delius (tenor saxophone) Shane Latimer (guitar) Justin Carroll (organ) Steve Davis (drums)

Developed at Bottlenote's landmark show BLEED at Dublin Fringe in 2016, Orgone Accumulator wildly reinterprets that classic ensemble – the organ quartet. Bringing together musicians based in Dublin, Belfast, Berlin and New York this group redraws the lines for what an organ combo can be.

"Delius's mastery of the tenor is sprawling, but the deep, warm richness of his tone is a constant, recalling the breathy sensuality of Ben Webster, the agile gravity of Sonny Rollins, and the pinched phrasing of Archie Shepp ..." Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader

Saturday 23rd February

8pm - Lina Andonovska/Matthew Jacobson

Lina Andonovska (flutes) and Matthew Jacobson (drum kit) come together occasionally to subdivide, recite semiotic quotes, and bring new sounds into the ether. Independently, both are internationally respected soundmakers in the fields of composed score and improvisation. Collectively, they are embarking upon a quest to commission new work and improvisational scenarios for their combination of amplified low flutes and drum kit. So far the duo have presented offerings for the Association of Irish Composers and performed as part of composer/performer Nick Roth’s residency at the Dun Laoghaire Lexicon. Upcoming projects include an appearance at the much-acclaimed improv and contemporary music ‘Bottlenote’ festival in Dublin and world domination.

10pm - Matthew Bourne's moogmemory

With a nod to the pioneering work of Annette Peacock and Paul Bley, Bourne has turned his considerable talents to the world of analogue synthesisers. Growing from improvised live performances, these compositions took shape in the studio as Bourne explored and moulded the vast sonic possibilities of voltage-controlled oscillators. The seed for this project was planted when he acquired an uncooperative 1982 Memorymoog, having it painstakingly modified and upgraded by Rudi Linhard in Germany. Created without the use of computers or sequencers, moogmemory is the first album to be recorded using only the Lintronics Advanced Memorymoog.

Sunday 24th February (please note earlier times)

3pm - Aonghus McEvoy

Aonghus McEvoy is a composer, improviser and guitar player based in Dublin. He explores the intersections between composition and improvisation, oblique restraint and histrionic rock excess. Aonghus' work moves between collaborations with improvisers, indeterminate scores for small ensembles and skewed takes on folk idioms. Aonghus has performed alongside musicians such as Rhodri Davies, Annette Krebs, Jon Collin, Ludo Mich, Damo Suzuki, David Maranha, Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh, Tristan Clutterbuck, Adam Pultz Melbye, Ricardo Jacinto, David Lacey and has realised scores by composers such as Conal Ryan, Jorge Boehringer and Eva-Maria Houben. He is also a member of fabricated folk troupe Woven Skull.

5pm - Silver Kites

Fionnuala Conway, Lenka Dobai, Judith Ring

Silver Kites is a Dublin-based vocal ensemble that write and perform new and experimental music. Their repertoire is diverse and includes experimental vocal and art-based projects that aim to bring choral music into new performance contexts. Musicians, artists and composers in their own right, the members have considerable experience in performance, music technology and multimedia exhibition, giving this group an eclectic mix of talents and skills with which to create and perform exciting and varied work.
