Molière’s Classic Farce

The wealthy, middle aged Arnolphe has a fear of clever women; he believes they are the single cause of men’s downfall. He plans to marry the young and beautiful Agnes. He has made sure she has been raised in absolute ignorance and innocence, away from all worldly things. This, he believes, will assure that he will never find himself in the unbearable position of being a cuckold. However, the handsome (but not too bright) young Horace has plans of his own and seeks Arnolphe’s assistance to elope with her. Rules for women, dual identities, crafty servants and unbelievable stupidity clash for supremacy in this modern version of Molière’s classic farce.

Directed and adapted by Peter Reid (Pinter X 4, Accidental Death of An Anarchist, Desire).
Although 350 years old, The School for Wives still has a lot to tell us about rules for women.

The New Theatre, 43 Essex Street East, 2 Dublin
