Description
“There is no artist quite like Mary Ocher. Her music is like an organism, evolving with each project, adapting to the world around it.” ExBerliner
“Experimental political pop artist Mary Ocher returns with a musical tour-de-force examining the collective dread of our impending future….’Approaching Singularity: Music for The End of Time’ is a stunning run through the history of experimental and electronic music” - The Wire
Enthusiastic Eunuch is thrilled to welcome back Mary Ocher for her third Dublin show, here first in 5 years, on the back of her stunning new album Approaching Singularity: Music for The End of Time. The album is accompanied by an essay that explores authoritarianism, unruly technology, and the diverse political and ethical implications of the impending changes for humankind. While the new recordings were made with Tunng/LUMP‘s Mike Lindsay and feature collaborations with Barry Burns (Mogwai), composer Roberto Cacciapaglia, pieces with Mary’s two drummers Your Government, and a homage to electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire
Over the past decade and a half Mary has been persistently creating passionate, uncompromising work, raw, thought provoking, socially and creatively pushing against the current, dealing with subjects of authority, identity and conflict. Her work is as enchanting as it is polarizing, ranging from traditional folk to raw 60s garage, ambient with ethereal vocals and abstract synths, to experimental pop with African and South American rhythms when performing with her drummers (Your Government).
Mary has toured in 40 countries with her previous releases, the last of which was recorded with H.J. Irmler of Krautrock pioneers Faust and feature collaborations with Felix Kubin, Die Tödliche Doris and Julia Kent. Most recently she was invited by Animal Collective to perform at Le Guess Who? festival, released a Ukraine charity EP and curated a compilation for girls’ education in Afghanistan.
Elaine Malone
Drawing from an eclectic array of influences - stemming from an early exposure to the rattling impact of 90s grunge and the visceral inventiveness of The Velvet Underground and Nico, to a later appreciation for shoegaze’s immersive soundscapes and storied country music by Lee Hazlewood - these elements colour Elaine Malone’s brilliantly expansive psych-rock material. Across Malone’s body of work, her magnetic presence, evocative lyricism and exhilarating instrumentation culminates in endlessly inventive compositions.
In July of this year Malone released her fabulous debut album ‘Pyrrych’. Named for pyrrhic victory, Malone's highly charged record examines the notion of spoils won at too high a price. Spanning from wall of sound shoegaze, sailing vocals and ominous guitars, 'Pyrrhic' marks a turning point of Malone's maturity as a songwriter and composer, departing from the subtle compositions of her debut EP 'Land' and achieving an ambitious scale of song.
Featuring the talents of long-time collaborator Sam Clague (Crying Loser) and the dynamic rhythm section of James Christie (The Bonk) and Ruairí Dale. 'Pyrrhic' was recorded in Cork city in December 2021 by Cathal MacGabhann of The Altered Hours and mixed by Sam Clague.
